The 170 Montauk

A Deeper Dive

The Montauk is a one-of-a-kind center console. With its modified deep-vee hull shape and square bow, it is the direct descendant of the very first Boston Whaler models. The model’s incredible evolution over the last half-century makes the Montauk very special to our brand, and to its many beloved owners.

In the early days, some people referred to Montauks as “Blue Bathtubs” due to their unique squared-up shape and blue-colored interior. Today, that unique look is what defines the vintage, “retro” edge of the Montauk, which is much appreciated by many consumers. It’s a crystal clear picture in the heads of many who came of age in the ’70s and ’80s – square bow, low sides, and high wrap-around safety rails that provide a silhouette like no other.

But what sets the Montauk apart most of all is its sterling reputation. Known for distinct simplicity and practicality, this easy-to-own, easy-to-use model has been a crowd-pleaser for decades past and will be for decades to come.

Unique Design and Laudable Evolution

The Montauk was born as a 17-footer in the early 1970s, growing out of previous designs from the 1960s. Its primary precursors were models such as the Sakonnet and Eastport, which had wooden consoles and varied interior layouts. Through detailed redesigns, the Montauk evolved to include a built-in fuel tank, forward fishing box, and numerous seating combinations that still define its versatility. These additions pushed the Montauk forward to become an easier to use, safer, and cleaner boat than ever before.

Since its inception in 1974, there’ve miraculously only been two complete redesigns of the Montauk. One, taking place in 2002, kept most of its features, but made the boat a bit longer, wider and deeper. The current Montauk model was introduced in 2018 to universal accolades from the recreational boating industry. Today, there are four Montauk models in four sizes between 15 and 21 feet: 150 Montauk, 170 Montauk, 190 Montauk and the 210 Montauk.

The Montauk’s design is often described as practical, and it rightly earns this description from the inside out. With its unique “Unibond construction,” this boat will never sink, one of Boston Whalers boats legendary qualities. Unsurprisingly, the materials used in its construction are designed to mitigate the effects of bright sun and saltwater, improving durability and explaining why many decades-old Montauks can still be found in harbors around the world. Whaler takes quality construction and materials very seriously. The hardware found on today’s Montauks is still considered “Yacht Quality,” with components like the 316 grade stainless-steel rails, cleats and fasteners being overbuilt to enjoy years of life.

Who is the Montauk a good fit for? Well, besides everybody? Specifically, Montauk is for owners who enjoy a wide range of activities, from fishing to day cruising, tow sports, and pretty much anything a family wants to do on the water. It’s even a rock-solid utility boat that can take a licking and keep on getting the work done. The Montauk does it all, safely, and for a long time. Because of a Montauk’s strength and solidness, many families pass them down from one generation to the next. The Boston Whaler Montauk is an invaluable part of many families’ histories, and it’s that for ours as well.

Where We are Today

Today, the Boston Whaler Montauk remains one of the most popular center console boats out there, thanks to its practical design, rugged utility and easy “hose-and-go” cleanup. The Montauk’s classic design, trademark unsinkability and a host of comfort-minded details make it all possible. With its stylish vintage flair and timeless aesthetic, this boat remains closely in touch with its authentic history, clearly seen in every detail, and truly appreciated in every way.

“The new Montauks deliver true turnkey operation, helping boaters get out on the water quickly and easily, and helping to ensure they enjoy the experience. And now they reflect the latest in design, engineering and technology, demonstrating what the Whaler name has meant and will always mean, for the past 60 years, the next 60 years and beyond.”

- Former Whaler President, Nick Stickler
