Most likely you need to reseal the lower end. I have found that those seals may begin leaking anytime after 500 hours or 12 - 15 years. I think you are due.
I am aware of that. I would like to hear from someone who has done the job. It is well known that the outer jacket has difficulty turning to starboard when it contacts the flywheel. Very tight and I cannot get my hand behind the block. Any tricks?
You didn't mention the year of the boat. If it is carbureted and has a distributor it is most likely the pickup on the mounted under the top plate. They are known to fail and the symptoms are as you describe. They work well until they get hot. It is...
