We had a similar issue occur twice over the last year with our 2008 260. We have the Mercury smart gauges. During each occurrence the gauges stuck on their reading. As good as going blank. We disconnected the main wiring harness behind the console and this reset them. It was like rebooting the system. No problems yet this year. Not sure if you have the same gauge system but it might be worth a try? Good luck.
