It's possible that both issues are a result of a bad ground connection, but unlikely in my opinion. The fuel gauge problem is most likely a bad sending unit. I had the same issue and a new sending unit fixed it. You'll need to remove the old one and measure it to insure getting the right replacement. The trim issue issue does sound like a bad ground. You'll need to check connections at both ends.
