Have a 2004 Sea Ray 260 Sundancer and would like to add a generator. What is the best, inexpensive way of doing this?

How about mounting a carry-on in the engine room? Would there be problems with the exhaust, overheating, etc.?

Never, ever install, store or even carry a portable generator in the engine compartment of a boat. These units are meant for outdoor use where you have no chance of exhaust buildup, exhaust heat transfer or gasoline spillage. No inexpensive portable unit will have the marine safety equipment that is required for the safe operation of your boat. This includes spill and vapor proof fuel tankage, fuel vapor venting, exhaust piping, spark arresting equipment, etc. if you take nothing else away from this comment, for the safety of your family and yourself, just remember the word, NEVER....
