Just fixed that on mine - 350 ci carb. Noise came from transmission (stationary gear to ring gear in gear reduction chucking) due to rough idle in my case due to vacuum leak caused by wedge to intake manifold leak. Apparently gasket was incompatible with ethanol, gasket softend and pieces got pulled into engine leaving gap/vacuum leak. Gasket replaced, problem solved and cheap!
