Hello:

I have a 2017 280 SLX with factory windless.  Dealer says anchor comes with 60' of Chain and 60' of rope.

The research I have done, it should have 14-to-28' of chain and approx 150' of rope.  30' of water, 5 x depth = 150'

I anchor in GA In-Land lake and anchor in no deeper than 25-30 feet.

Thoughts?

Depending on the lake conditions, I suspect you could easily go to 2-3 times rope vs dept of the water. In this case either of the above should work with an advantage to the longer chain for holding power. If you were somewhere else, fighting tidal currents and wind, then definitely back up to the 5x rode length. Also, I would also suggest having a secondary anchor on board. They are very useful.

Just picked up my ‘19 SDX270 and it has the 14-28 feet of chain and 60 feet of rope, going to measure and mark every 10 feet of it today so I can judge my scope more effectively. By the book 5 to 7 x depth, I’ve had several well seasoned captains here tell me 3-5. Agree on the second anchor.

Our 07 270SLX came to us (2nd owners) with 14’ chain and 60’ rope. We’re boating in the Gulf off Clearwater so sometimes anchor in 30’ depths. I immediately upped our rode to 30’ chain and 180’ rope and now it’s a tighter fit inn the chain locker but worth it. We also carry a second anchor with that original rode on it ... a must have IMHO.

Thank you all for the valuable comments. The 60' of chain does NOT allow the scope, but rather the chain lays down. This was a brand new 2017 leftover, and not sure why such a long 60' chain.

I do have a second anchor, which is great advice.

I am going to exchange the 60' of chain for 30' of Chain and the 60' line with at least 150' of rope.

Thank you all for the prompt responses.

It is likely that specific chain / rope combination was selected because the chain locker is small.

Check the windlass specification. It will list a minimum height from the top of the anchor rode to the windlass deck.

The longer chain was probably selected because chain falls better than rope and will fill a small / low anchor locker better than rope.
