Hi, all! So-question for all inboard...

Hi, all!

So-question for all inboard owners.

I’ve got an 05 185 Sport.  I am having to top off the drive lube levels about two times each season...I’d estimate after about fifteen hours of use or thereabout.  I don’t lose much, but I am starting to wonder where I’m losing it and why.  All other fluid levels stay normal...not losing or burning oil or anything.  It’s just the drive lube.

Anyone have any experience with this issue?  Any ideas?

I am having the same issue, I am thinking it may be the Oring where the tube feeds into the lower unit, but I haven't figured it out, yet. I don't see any visible oil anywhere when I visually inspect.

Assume you have an alpha drive. More than likely o ring of prop deal.

Me, either-no signs of oil leaking anywhere...nothing in the water...nothing on the outside of the outboard...nothing in the bilge or any water in the impeller area...so, no real signs of any issues except having to occasionally just top off the drive lube.

I’m thinking when it’s time to winterize this year, I’ll let the marina where I bought the boat do the work and give it a thorough checkup. It’s been three seasons since we took it out of the marina and I’ve been doing my own servicing on it since. It’s due for a professional job.

I had the same issue as well and it ended up being the carrier seal by the water pump. Hope that helps.

Cool-that doesn’t sound too bad. Was it just regular wear and tear?

I’m thinking about having the pros check everything out this season when I winterize everything just to be sure all is okay.

Two year old boat. Took it to my local dealer and they figured it out. Running great this season with no issues.

Really? Only two years old? What did they say caused the seal failure?

I just replaced the water pump and all the orings myself so they are new. In my case, it has been leaking the same before and after my water pump replacement. In order to remove the bottom half of the Alpha I gen2 drive that I had to remove an oil line that appeared to be pretty loose. It does have a clip to remove thia line housing ...it looks to have an Oring on the inside. This is the Oring I plan to replace, to see if it helps.

They said it just happens...they did do a pressure test and that’s how they figured it out.

Okay...that’s good to know...maybe a pressure test will tell the tale on mine.
