Just picked up a 2011 300 slx. The steering seems 'sloppy' and has 4-5 inches of play in slow speeds. Anyone else have this problem? Tech said it may be the rack has gone bad which sounds odd with a boat of this age. Thoughts?

I have the same problem on a 2002 220 BR. I was told that drift is common with I/O at no wake speed.
Trimming the prop all the way down helps a bit.
I think any play in the steering plus the "normal" drift makes it worse. I'm constantly correcting.

When you do your drive service this fall, have the tech check the gimble bearing - it may be bad. The steering should not have this much slop, in my opinion

Should have no slop.....at all. Possible that the rack is going bad, but this would truly be unusual at its age.

Gimbal bearing replaced and the gimbal collar is fine.
