Doesn't it come out with the exhaust?

It comes out of the two holes in the bottom of the transom assembly and the prop

No I've since installed a new impeller and gaskets. Now my problem is
when I took down the lower case I believe i brought the shift
connector with it. Now it just hangs loose out of upper and cotter pin
and metal washer seem to have no purpose. Very heavy and hard for a
4'11" 65 year old woman! But I'm moving on to taking the upper case
off to make sure cavle etc. are hooked up! Any tips or thoughts on
this? Should that shift thing be loose? Thanks Kevin

Exhaust and cooling water exit prop only when underway.
