I purchased a new to me 2002 220 bowrider with the 260 hp v8. It has the Alpha 1 outdrive.

The boat is used for cruising, and occassional towing and water skiing. Top end is about 45 mph with 2 passengers.

What will I gain by upgrading the outdrive and is it worth it?

Any suggestions on an upgrade?

Thanks all.

Hope the boating season is going well for everyone.

The Bravo drive is a lot bigger than the Alpha drive and will add to the boat weight. I don't think you will get more speed by upgrading. I have a 2003 220 Sundeck with a 5.0 MPI and an alpha drive on it, if I trim it out at top speed I can get about 49-51 mph out of her. Try trimming up a bit at top speed and see if you get a bit more out of it. I run the stock 14x19 SS Vengeance prop on mine. That could make a difference if you have the wrong prop size/pitch.

I agree on the prop size. How many RPMS are you getting? I have the exact same boat as you with the 5.0L MPI and a Bravo 3 drive and get 55+ out of it. That is a heavy boat and the B3 gives lots of torque.

Bravo 3 I would think a rather expensive upgrade. Swapping props is a pretty cheap alternative. Try a 4 blade 15.
