Just a heads up for those new owners...

Just a heads up for those new owners of  SPX models with the 150 OB: The oil filter that comes from the manufacturer is on way too tight. After trying both oil filter wrenches I had, adjustable and cap, both slipped off or stripped free. I ended up having to punch a screw driver through the filter to get it to break loose. Could just be my particular engine but figured I would pass it along

Also recommend pulling your plug and then putting a garden hose in the pass-thru in your ski locker. I was able to wash out 3 (three) mystery stainless steel screws, who's home I cannot find, and plenty of left over Fiberglas shards. Items that would have ruined my bilge pump had I not done that.

It is likely that the filter torque was correct and not excessive. The proper placement of the oil filter requires a thin film of oil on the rubber seal. I have experienced oil filters that were "welded" onto the block because of no oil on the seal, one by the manufacturer, on by a quick lube. Both required destruction of the filter for removal.

Always keep the engine room clean. It makes routine inspection much more effective to locate something amiss.

You boat is new. It is likely that screws were dropped during factory assembly that were not retrieved.

Stuck oil filters on any age boat and migrating screews nothing New. And all pumps have a screen to keep debris out. That screen should be checked and cleaned on a regular basis. Wingless has it right. Keeping a ship, ship shape is the key....

Thanks guys. I always put oil around the seal and decided to change the oil at 25 hours after break in instead of 100 like they recommend. Good call on the screws didn't think of that.
